So…Prince is the halftime act for the Super Bowl this year. This frustrates me. Prince? Has he done anything new in the last ten years? Does he appeal to football fans? I have composed a list of bands/acts that, in my opinion, would have made a much better choice for this year’s halftime (in no particular order):
Red Hot Chili Peppers: With their decades of music, drug addictions, and high-profile lives, I’ve always thought of them as the “American Rolling Stones.” In fact, I think the Chili Peppers are more deserving of an invitation than the English Rolling Stones (last year’s performers). Here’s why: They still put out good music (new album is quality), they’re sports fans (Flea has his own
Lakers Blog), and they’re American (this is huge considering the Brits don’t watch American Football).
*side note: The last two half time acts were British. This would be like the Eagles playing half time at their soccer championships – it doesn’t make a lot of sense.
Pearl Jam: They would most likely decline the offer, but would be an excellence choice. Most people seem to appreciate a good Pearl Jam song and they’re good live …wait a minute. Never mind. They would probably try to get a big political message involved and ruin it (scratch that).
Tom Petty: I know…he hasn’t done anything significant in a while (like Prince), but he appeals to many and covers a wide age-gap.
DMB: Kind of a love’m or hate’m band however, they’re great live and have a long collection of songs. They may be a little too long-winded for this event though.
’85 Chicago Bears: Since the Bears are in it again...lets get the old Bear team back to do the Superbowl shuffle.
And finally…
Journey Reunion: Oh...this would be too good. Just imagine Steve getting back with the band for this big event. I know...it's obviously hard for me to post a blog without mentioning these guys.
Here is why. And if they were to reinact that video on stage at halftime...well, it can't get much better than that.
